Dunnes Stores vs Tesco Ireland: 60+ Branded Products Compared (April 2026)
Tesco is Ireland's biggest-selling supermarket. Dunnes Stores has, in the last few years, consistently held the largest grocery market share in the Republic. The two chains overlap more than any other pairing in Irish grocery — both run full ranges, both sell the same branded SKUs, and both reward regular shoppers with a structured discount mechanism. So which is actually cheaper on the products you buy week after week?
We pulled live prices from the MasterMarket database — both stores' websites, scraped within the last 21 days, matched at the branded-SKU level — and compared 277 products. Here's what the data shows this week.
Headline finding: On identical branded products, Tesco and Dunnes are at price parity on roughly half the matched SKUs. Tesco's Clubcard discounts dominate on branded multi-packs (Cadbury, Heinz, Kellogg's promotional lines, Birds Eye frozen). Dunnes wins consistently on personal care, household consumables, premium ice cream, and several Irish-favourite branded snacks. Both chains carry full ranges, so the choice often comes down to which loyalty mechanic you can actually use — Tesco's digital Clubcard or Dunnes' printed Shop & Save vouchers.
The matched-brand comparison (live April 2026)
All prices captured from tesco.ie and dunnesstoresgrocery.com in the last 21 days. "Tesco Clubcard" indicates a membership-only price requiring a Tesco Clubcard. Multi-buy prices assume you meet the minimum quantity. Dunnes prices show the regular shelf price — see the data quality note for why we're ignoring the Dunnes promotion flag in this pull.
Chocolate & confectionery
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cadbury Crunchie 4 Pack 104.4g | €2.00 (Clubcard, was €3.15) | €2.50 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard) |
| Cadbury Twirl 5 Pack 107.5g | €2.00 (Clubcard, was €3.15) | €2.50 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard) |
| Cadbury Wispa 4 Pack | €2.00 (Clubcard, was €3.15) | €2.50 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard) |

| Cadbury Hot Chocolate 500g | €3.65 | €3.50 | Dunnes (€0.15) |
| Wispa Gold | €1.95 (multi-buy) | €1.95 | Tie |
Tesco's Clubcard prices on Cadbury sharing-pack ranges are aggressive — €2 flat on every four-pack. Without a Clubcard you'd pay €3.15 at Tesco, materially more than Dunnes' €2.50. On single-bar SKUs (Snack Shortcake, Hot Chocolate) Dunnes is consistently a few cents cheaper.
Dairy, eggs, bread, butter
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |

| Cheestrings Original 8 Pack 160g | €3.49 | €2.00 | Dunnes (€1.49) |
Kerrygold, Dairygold, Avonmore and Brennans flagship SKUs are price-matched. Where Dunnes pulls ahead is in branded ice cream and Cheestrings — the kind of items you stock up on weekly with kids in the house. The 30%+ gap on Cheestrings is the largest dairy-aisle delta in this pull.
Tea, coffee, cereal
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barry's Tea Gold Blend 250g | €4.09 | €4.09 | Tie |
| Lyons Original Blend Tea | €3.00 (Clubcard, was €4.00) | €3.00 | Tie |
| Lyons Gold Blend 40 Tea Bags 116g | €2.50 | €2.25 | Dunnes (€0.25) |
| Maxwell House Instant Coffee | €6.99 | €7.00 | Tie |
| Kenco Smooth Instant Coffee 200g | €8.49 | €6.50 | Dunnes (€1.99) |
| Kellogg's Cornflakes 1kg | €4.99 | €4.99 | Tie |

| Flahavan's Flapjack Chocolate Chip 240g | €3.99 | €3.99 | Tie |
Tea is fully price-matched at the everyday level, including Tesco's Clubcard offer on Lyons. Coffee is split — Maxwell House identical, Kenco Smooth nearly €2 cheaper at Dunnes. Cereal is the textbook Clubcard story: Kellogg's Crunchy Nut is full price (€5.49) at Dunnes, but a Tesco Clubcard cuts it in half.
Cooking, condiments, pantry
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise 430ml | €3.49 | €3.50 | Tie |

| Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce 150ml | €3.79 | €2.69 | Dunnes (€1.10) |
| Ballymaloe Relish 350g | €3.89 | €3.89 | Tie |
Mayonnaise, ketchup at the larger pack size, gravy granules and Ballymaloe Relish are dead ties. The two clean Clubcard wins for Tesco are Heinz squeezy 460g (35% off) and Kellogg's Crunchy Nut. The clean Dunnes win is Worcestershire Sauce — Dunnes prices Lea & Perrins at €2.69 against Tesco's €3.79, a ~30% gap with no loyalty card needed.

| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fairy Original Washing Up Liquid 320ml | €2.00 (multi-buy) | €1.80 | Dunnes (€0.20) |

| Andrex Toilet Tissue 9 Rolls | €7.59 (multi-buy) | €6.75 | Dunnes (€0.84) |
| Domestos Bleach 750ml | €1.75 (multi-buy) | €1.75 | Tie |
| Dettol Surface Spray 500ml | €3.50 | €2.50 | Dunnes (€1.00) |
| Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner 750ml | €2.50 (Clubcard, was €3.50) | €2.50 | Tie |
Cleaning and household consumables tilt structurally to Dunnes — five clear wins, two ties, only Finish Quantum tablets favouring Tesco (and only via Clubcard). For a typical "restock the cleaning cupboard" run, Dunnes will save you €5–€10.
Personal care
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colgate Total Original Toothpaste 75ml | €3.50 (Clubcard, was €7.00) | €3.50 | Tie |
| Aquafresh Triple Protection Toothpaste 75ml | €1.75 (Clubcard, was €2.00) | €2.00 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard) |
| Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Shampoo 400ml | €6.15 (multi-buy) | €6.60 | Tesco (€0.45) |
| Aussie Miracle Moist Shampoo 300ml | €3.87 (Clubcard, was €7.75) | €4.00 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard) |
| Dove Pampering Body Wash 225ml | €5.00 | €2.50 | Dunnes (€2.50) |
| Dove Original 3-in-1 Beauty Bar 2 × 90g | €3.25 | €2.50 | Dunnes (€0.75) |
| Gillette SkinGuard Razor Blades 4 Pack | €16.15 | €16.70 | Tesco (€0.55) |
Personal care is split. Tesco wins on toothpaste and shampoo (helped by aggressive Clubcard markdowns), Dunnes wins decisively on Dove body care — the Pampering Body Wash is half the price.
Frozen & pizza
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birds Eye 10 Potato Waffles 567g | €2.50 (Clubcard, was €2.99) | €3.49 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard, €0.99) |
| Birds Eye 4 Chicken Burgers 200g | €4.95 (multi-buy) | €3.00 | Dunnes (€1.95) |
| Birds Eye Chicken Dippers 38 Pack 697g | €6.50 (Clubcard, was €7.75) | €7.75 | Tesco (w/ Clubcard) |
| Goodfella's Stonebaked Pepperoni Pizza | €4.19 (multi-buy) | €4.75 | Tesco (€0.56) |
| Dr. Oetker Ristorante Mozzarella 355g | €4.25 (multi-buy) | €4.25 | Tie |
| Chicago Town Takeaway Stuffed Crust Pepperoni | €6.25 (multi-buy) | €5.00 | Dunnes (€1.25) |
| Green Isle Skin On Rustic Chips 800g | €4.50 | €3.50 | Dunnes (€1.00) |
Frozen is the most volatile category — three Tesco wins, three Dunnes wins, one tie. Worth checking individual SKUs each shop rather than assuming one chain leads.
Soft drinks & juice
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coca-Cola Original 1L | €2.35 | €2.35 | Tie |
| Coca-Cola Zero 2L | €3.40 (multi-buy) | €3.40 | Tie |
| Innocent Smooth Orange 900ml | €3.99 (multi-buy) | €3.99 | Tie |
| Capri-Sun Orange 10 × 200ml | €5.55 | €4.50 | Dunnes (€1.05) |
| Ballygowan Water | €2.25 | €2.25 | Tie |
Cola, water and juice are fully price-matched. Capri-Sun multi-packs run cheaper at Dunnes — the kind of school-lunchbox SKU where one chain quietly leads.
Pet, baby & wine
| Product | Tesco | Dunnes Stores | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felix As Good As It Looks Cat Food 12 × 100g | €8.50 | €6.50 | Dunnes (€2.00) |
| Aptamil 1 First Baby Milk Powder 800g | €16.49 | €16.49 | Tie |
| Aptamil 3 Toddler Milk Powder 800g | €16.49 | €16.49 | Tie |
| 19 Crimes Red Wine 75cl | €12.00 (Clubcard, was €15) | €10.00 | Dunnes (€2.00) |
| Hop House 13 Irish Lager 8 × 500ml | €16.50 | €15.00 | Dunnes (€1.50) |
Branded baby formula is the most strictly price-matched category in Irish grocery (no chain undercuts on infant milk). Wine is one of Dunnes' structural advantages — even Tesco's Clubcard offer on 19 Crimes (€15 → €12) doesn't beat Dunnes' €10 everyday price.
The loyalty story: Clubcard vs Shop & Save
Both chains have a structured discount mechanic, but they work very differently:
- Tesco Clubcard is a digital, per-product mechanism. Clubcard members see a lower shelf price on selected SKUs — usually 20–50% off. The discount is unlocked at the checkout when you scan the card. There's no minimum spend. Where it shines: branded multi-packs (Cadbury, Heinz, Kellogg's), where Clubcard prices are often €1–€3 below Dunnes' regular shelf.
- Dunnes Shop & Save is a basket-level mechanism: spend €50, get a €10 voucher off your next shop. The vouchers print at the till, are tied to "Shop & Save weekend" event dates, and can only be redeemed in the published window. Where it shines: any time you'd be doing a €50+ shop anyway. Effective discount: ~20% on the next basket, regardless of category.
In practice, Clubcard is more product-targeted and Shop & Save is more basket-targeted. A shopper who buys mostly branded chocolate, ketchup, and laundry-pod multi-packs gets more out of Clubcard. A shopper who does a single big weekly shop gets more out of Shop & Save. Neither replaces the other — and many Irish households use both, switching depending on the week.
So who's cheaper overall?
The honest answer: on like-for-like branded baskets, Dunnes is slightly cheaper at everyday prices. Tesco closes the gap (and often flips it) once Clubcard activates on multi-packs.
Concretely, from the matched-SKU pull:
- Without Clubcard (regular shelf prices both sides), Dunnes wins on roughly 35% of branded SKUs by an average of €0.80, ties on roughly 50%, and loses on roughly 15%.
- With Clubcard active on the products that have Clubcard offers this week, Tesco's win rate jumps to roughly 35%, ties stay at ~50%, and Dunnes' edge shrinks to roughly 15%.
The shopping mix that maximises savings:
- Shopper 1 — Dunnes-only, no card: strong on cleaning, personal care, frozen, wine, pet food.
- Shopper 2 — Tesco-only with Clubcard: strong on Cadbury, Kellogg's, Heinz, Birds Eye Clubcard SKUs.
- Shopper 3 — splits the shop, holds both Clubcard and a Shop & Save voucher: typically beats either single-store strategy by €5–€15 on a €70 weekly shop. This is the MasterMarket use case — we show both prices side-by-side on every product page.
How we compare
Prices are scraped from tesco.ie and dunnesstoresgrocery.com and stored in the MasterMarket database. We only include rows that passed automatic validation (no obvious outliers, correctly parsed SKU, brand and pack-size matched across both chains). "Tesco Clubcard" means a membership price requiring a Tesco Clubcard. Multi-buy prices assume you meet the minimum quantity. We refresh this table monthly.
Data quality note (April 2026)
In the current Dunnes pull, almost every row carries a promotion_type flag (multi_buy, fixed_amount_off, percentage_off) even when the regular price equals the original price. This mirrors the Aldi scraper noise audited under MASA-94 and addressed in MASA-97 — it's a scraper regex over-matching the in-store "Shop & Save" / "Better Value" badges that appear on most product cards rather than evidence of an actual on-sale status. For this comparison we've ignored the Dunnes promotion field and treated stored prices as the regular shelf price unless original_price > price (which the data shows is rare in this window). We'll republish with corrected promotional tagging once the Dunnes scraper cleanup ships.
We also excluded ~10 rows where the matched SKU clearly differs in pack size (e.g. 500ml Fanta vs 2L, smaller starter pot of Aptamil priced as the 1L SKU). These are alias-quality issues we're addressing separately.
FAQ
Is Dunnes cheaper than Tesco for the weekly shop in Ireland? On a like-for-like branded basket without a loyalty card, Dunnes is typically a few euro cheaper, with the biggest wins in cleaning, personal care, branded ice cream, and wine. With a Tesco Clubcard active on Cadbury, Heinz and Kellogg's multi-packs, Tesco usually closes or flips the gap. Many Irish households split between the two each week.
Which products are exactly the same price at Dunnes and Tesco? In our April 2026 pull: Kerrygold 454g, Dairygold 454g, Brennans Wholegrain 800g, Avonmore milk (1L, 2L, super-milk variants), Barry's Tea Gold Blend, Maxwell House, Kellogg's Cornflakes 1kg, Hellmann's Mayonnaise (430ml and 750ml), Heinz Tomato Ketchup 650g, Bisto Granules, Ballymaloe Relish, Coca-Cola, Innocent juice, Ballygowan, Aptamil 1 and 3, and Goodfella's Margherita 334g — all priced identically.
Is Dunnes' Shop & Save voucher better than Tesco's Clubcard? They serve different purposes. Tesco Clubcard cuts the shelf price on specific branded products at the till — best when you buy a lot of branded multi-packs. Dunnes Shop & Save gives you €10 off when you spend €50 in a published voucher window — best when you do one big weekly shop and can plan around the voucher dates. They're complements, not substitutes; a household that uses both saves more than one that uses either.
Does Dunnes Stores price-match Tesco? No. Neither Dunnes nor Tesco operate an Irish retail price-match guarantee. Their pricing teams clearly track each other (the long list of identically-priced SKUs above is no accident), but each chain sets its own shelf price independently.
How often is this comparison updated? Monthly. The MasterMarket site shows live prices for every individual product year-round — this article is a snapshot view.
Where can I see every product's live price? Search any product on MasterMarket — the product page shows current prices across Tesco, Aldi, SuperValu, Dunnes Stores, and Lidl, plus 12-month price history.
